Core Program Projects 2024-2025
A key aspect of each Leadership Lackawanna Core Program Class is the opportunity for participants to expand their knowledge of local organizations and hone leadership skills through participation in a small group project. This year, we are proud to announce our collaboration with the following five fellow nonprofit organizations:
anthracite bicycle coalition
Our team partnered with ABC to help create the very first bicycle kitchen in NEPA which is located in Scranton’s Connell Park. A bike kitchen not only builds communities by supporting sustainable transportation, but it’s also a place for people to repair their bikes and learn safe cycling skills. Our project consisted of refurbishing bicycles, purchasing additional bike stations and tools, recruiting volunteers, increasing awareness, fostering a sense of community pride, and encouraging people to connect, learn, and share the love of cycling. We also assisted in the deconstruction and then re-build of several bikes. Overall, our project aided the dedicated volunteers of ABC so that they could continue their work in the local community. They are now ready to provide road-worthy bicycles to community members who need or want a bicycle but are otherwise unable to afford or purchase bicycles.
Catherine McAuley Center
The Catherine McAuley Center’s mission is to provide temporary residence and individualized case management to those in crisis. The Center recently added a new property to its shelter program. This property is more than a shelter, it’s a haven empowering families to rewrite their narratives with resilience and hope. Within the property, there was a large space used as a family gathering area and a second space that needed a purpose. Leadership Lackawanna first wanted to assist the Center in re-envisioning the family space. We decided to create a trauma-informed, therapeutic room for families to “family together” beyond the crisis. We gave the room some fresh paint, new flooring, new fixtures, and several new play items. We then tackled the second room, which now provides teens with a relaxing place to call their own. We are thrilled with the outcomes of both rooms and feel they reflect a commitment to ensuring every family, no matter their circumstance, is treated with respect and provided with the support needed to rebuild their lives.
Lackawanna Valley Heritage Authority
The Lackawanna Valley Heritage Authority commits to involve the community in the conservation of regional history and natural resources. Leadership Lackawanna joined this cause and established a sensory trail at the Parker Street Trailhead in the Greenridge section of Scranton. This designated area now incorporates a picnic area, sensory garden, raised flower beds, interpretive signage, and an educational space. This team had a goal to create an environment that promoted inclusivity and to establish a connection between people and the natural surroundings of Parker Street, hence, ensuring enjoyment for generations to come. We are proud to introduce this new, 1/12-mile trail to the community and appreciate the partnership with LHVA.
Outreach Center for Community Resources
Here in our community, there is a nonprofit dedicated to multi-faceted programs promoting family stability and economic self-sufficiency. This nonprofit is known as Outreach – Center for Community Resources. Leadership Lackawanna supported Outreach’s young adult program by transforming a new space in their building. With a primary focus on health and wellness, our team created a vision and got to work! We installed a new floor, painted, purchased gym equipment, like yoga mats and outdoor sports supplies, and provided Outreach clients with workout plans, health subscriptions, healthy meal plans and recipes, and overall general resources. This work was done to ensure that the environment is both engaging and sustainable and will have a lasting impact on current and future families in our area.
Waverly Community House
Our team worked with the Waverly Community House to refurbish their Scout Room, a versatile multipurpose space used for various activities, from yoga classes to community meetings and film screenings. The current state of the room was outdated and inadequate for the community's diverse needs. So, our team devised a project involving essential tasks such as historically appropriate wall painting, new closet shelving, new flooring, furniture upgrades, and archival photo displays. The Waverly Community House is a longstanding institution with a mission to enrich the lives of individuals and families through educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities and our Leadership Lackawanna team was so happy to partner with them on this incredible project.

2022-2023
NORTH POCONO DANDY LION LITTLE LEAGUE
The North Pocono Dandy Little League needed our assistance in modernizing its decades-old concession stand. Our team made major improvements like stainless-steel counters, shelving, storage, and new appliances like a food warmer and pizza oven.
WEST SCRANTON JUNIOR INVADERS
Time had significantly taken a toll on the press box of The West Scranton Junior Invaders, so our team acted on a complete revitalization which included new siding, flooring, drywall, paint, countertops, security system, sound system, and additional cosmetic items.
UNITED NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS OF NEPA
In conjunction with United Neighborhoods Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s five-year Pine Brook Community Revitalization Plan, our team created the strategy and initiated the development, site clean-up, and renovation of a vacant lot in this part of Scranton. The ultimate goal is to create a space where the community can come together to enjoy the outdoors while re-imagining what the space can be!
CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER OF NEPA
Our team worked with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania to completely renovate their Teen Center's waiting area. This included new furniture, flooring, and doors, along with a fresh coat of paint and modish décor!
INDRALOKA ANIMAL SANCTUARY
The Indraloka Animal Sanctuary asked for assistance in creating a dedicated walking trail around their property and farm, so our team set out to make enhancements that will serve as both an educational and inspirational experience for those who visit. The trail is now complete and included mile markers, signage, and benches.
2021-2022
Camp Freedom
Camp Freedom is an outdoor adventure healing camp located in Carbondale, PA that serves Veterans, First Responders, their families, and Gold Star families. The facility consists of over 1,800 acres, 26 miles of which, are hiking trails. Our team assisted Camp Freedom in developing a more user-friendly trail and mapping system to provide easier navigation and accessibility for all who experience the beauty and splendor of this amazing facility. More specifically, our team cleared and blazed miles of hiking trails, installed 96 signs throughout camp and clearly labeled several ponds, hunting blinds, and food plots. In addition, our team held an awareness walk at the camp, not only to raise funds to help support these effort, but to bring additional awareness of this much needed facility and outdoor space.
Dolly Parton Imagination Library
Leadership Lackawanna worked with the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties, along with several local Foundations, to launch the Dolly Parton Imagination Library here in Lackawanna County. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is an international book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income. This Leadership team focused their work on research, outreach, awareness, development, and training. They also held several pop-up events to bring even more awareness of this initiative to Lackawanna County and to date have enrolled over 1300 local children in this important, educational and worthwhile initiative.
Mercatili-Segilia Park
The Mercatili-Segilia Park is a quaint, community park nestled just off of Birney Avenue in Moosic, PA. Time has taken a toll on this outdoor space, therefore our team assisted in the revitalization and rehabilitation of the park by completing a variety of tasks and improvements. This included purchasing and then waterproof sealing 21 new picnic tables, constructing four new serving tables, providing the park with all new signage, and refurbishing 4 benches with new wood. In addition, the team enhanced the 30 year old gazebo by giving it a major facelift – a new roof, new shingles and new paint! In total, our team, along with 50 other community volunteers, invested more than 100 hours improving this community asset for the citizens of Moosic – and beyond!
NeighborWorks of NEPA
Leadership Lackawanna is thrilled to have assisted in the development, volunteer recruitment and launch of a brand new initiative called Cutting with Care. Cutting With Care is a volunteer program that provides free grass cutting and light lawn maintenance to older adults in the Scranton / Lackawanna County area. Not only does this service address a major need, but it allows these adults to stay safe and healthy in their homes, and it boasts pride and respect for the community. Our partner in this initiative was NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania – a local nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing neighborhoods and improving lives by addressing housing needs, resident empowerment, neighborhood revitalization, sustainable homeownership, and public-private partnerships.
2020-2021
Boys and Girls Clubs of NEPA
The team designed, created, produced and uploaded over 20 short videos for the students to watch as a means of quality programming. The videos covered a wide range of topics and include things such as arts & culture, home economics, the environment, health, and safety. In addition, the team raised money to purchase a Smart TV and iPad for use in the club, procured a manual on how to create and edit videos and then held several trainings with staff before handing off the project.
Keystone Mission
Homeless individuals without identification have difficulty accessing the critical services and benefits that can move them out of homelessness and poverty. In an effort to help the homeless secure photo identification, social security cards and birth certificates, the Leadership team designed, outfitted and equipped a utility van currently owned by Keystone Mission. In addition, the team held an event to fill the van with essential items and office supplies. This “mobile office van” now allows their staff to conduct on-site outreach and help homeless individuals.
NeighborWorks NEPA and the City of Scranton
When Leadership Lackawanna heard The City needed a Hometown Heroes street banner program to honor local veterans and generate community pride we jumped into action! Starting in West Scranton, as part of NeighborWorks of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s long-term revitalization efforts, this team was responsible for the development, marketing and execution of the program.
North Pocono Library
The Library needed an outdoor space where they could offer outdoor programming. The team then purchased a vinyl gazebo and had it built next to the library. This new, open structure will allow for library patrons, including their children’s story hour group and gardening club, to use year round.
2019 - 2020
CATHERINE mCaULEY center
Members of this team created a safe, positive outdoor learning and activity center in the backyard of the house. They created outdoor learning stations and coordinated programs and activities for the families served at the center.
griffin POND animal shelter
The group constructed a small clinical room at the shelter where minor medical procedures can now be performed. The group raised necessary funding in order to complete the design, demolition and construction of the room.
The Greater Scranton YMCA
Our team upgraded an existing preschool-aged play area and created a tricycle riding arena. The area was developed with a city/country theme and incorporates the educational theory of Multiple Intelligence within the activities and enhancements.
Valley Community Library
This project provided the citizens of Peckville and surrounding communities with an interactive and educational outdoor garden maze. The team constructed the ADA compliant maze in the backyard of the library and have now created an environment for children to learn and have fun.
West Scranton Community Development
The team updated, refurbished and transformed space within the facility into a fitness studio which houses activities such as yoga, dance and Zumba. Specifically, the room received new paint, flooring, mirrors, storage space, supplies, fitness equipment and a stereo system.
2018 - 2019
St. Joseph’s Center
The team worked with St. Joseph’s Center to equip both the Multi-Purpose and Therapy Room at the Trinity Child Care Center in Dunmore. This included purchasing equipment that the staff requires to meet children’s needs in a nurturing environment that enhances each child’s growth and development such as, therapy mats, interactive carpets, sensory tactile sets, booster seats and skill developing games. In addition, they are creating a small, outdoor playground area for the children equipped with slides, climbing walls and sensory toys. Due to circumstances beyond their control, the Center is not yet open, however a ribbon cutting for this team is planned for the Fall.
The Ritz Theater
By transforming the lobby of the Ritz Theater on Wyoming Avenue in downtown Scranton, the class has brought this iconic landmark back to life. With an emphasis on historic significance, the team created a vibrant, living display including archival photos, advertisements, and images pertaining to the theater, as well as genuine artifacts found in the Ritz Theater’s collection. They hosted an unveiling of the lobby in early May and rightfully named it the Poli Historic Gallery, in honor of founder Sylvester Poli who founded the iconic performing arts center in 1907.
NEPA Youth Shelter
This team transformed a room inside the NEPA Youth Shelter into a creative musical space hence providing teens with a safe place to express themselves and showcase their musical abilities. The room is furnished with state-of-the-art sound recording equipment and software and includes a sound-proof studio recording booth. The room was dedicated on May 23, and the teens are now able to showcase their talent by writing and recording music and spoken-word poetry.
The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple
This team has transformed the Junior Ballroom, in the lower level of the building, to a functional black box theater. They developed the overall design, marketing strategies, implementation and construction of the space which included installing lights, configuring audio equipment, and hanging curtains. Now complete, the space can be used for productions including summer campers and musical dance productions. Additionally, classes and workshops for all ages in acting, improvisation, musical theater, and dance will be held in the space.
2017 - 2018
Anthracite Heritage Museum
In honor of 250 years of anthracite coal mining in the United States, the Leadership team helped the community to “Rediscover the Anthracite Heritage Museum.” This project hads two main goals - to celebrate the museum’s unique history and culture and to increase patronship - and consisted of an event and the creation of a recognition/sponsorship sculpture.
Lackawanna Heritage Valley
The group developed a “founder’s day” type event celebrating local heritage. This free, family-friendly community event was held at the Olive Street Trailhead along the Downtown Scranton Riverwalk on Saturday, April 28, 2018 and contained various exhibits, activities and performances, like historically relevant song and dance from a local theatre group.
Nay Aug Park, City of Scranton
Located in Nay Aug Park, the Pavilion, formerly known as the Everhart or Marmie Pavilion, was built in 1897. It is among the first buildings erected in the park. Time has taken a toll on this pavilion. The team revitalized and refurbished the pavilion and completed various landscaping tasks.
The Farmhouse Sanctuary
Recently founded in 2016, this farmed animal rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary had Leadership Lackawanna replace a small bridge, enhance their walking trails and create a meditation area on the property.
2016 - 2017
Artists For Art (AFA) Gallery
In collaboration with the gallery’s 29th birthday, the class reintroduced AFA to the community through new marketing material and membership information, engaging a whole new audience and celebrating “the visual arts” though an exciting community event.
Friends of the Poor
Participants helped market the Friends of the Poor’s new “Need a Ride?” program, which provides free transportation to and from medical appointments to Carbondale residents who can safely ride in a minivan. They also helped create an electronic data gathering system that the Friends of the Poor will be able utilize for the daily administration of the program.
Saint Joseph’s Center
Participants marketed the center’s First Home Program, which assists mothers from Walsh Manor and the Mother/Infant Program when they move into permanent housing. We created marketing materials, organize and implement a volunteer team campaign and create a social media based inventory/collection system for the First Home Program. The system will now assist in maintaining the program’s furniture inventory, requesting members to seek out, transform and store quality home goods for the Program.
2015 - 2016
Children's Advocacy Center
This team installed a healing and transformation garden in the backyard of the Teen Advocacy Center! It incorporates a variety of features, a butterfly garden, a reflection area, a fire pit, hammocks, swings, a sandbox, a picnic area and a brick walkway.
Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB) - City of Scranton
This team created a publicly-accessible online database of Scranton's historic properties. This resource will help HARB preserve the city's rich architectural history. It will also be useful to city officials, local architects, property owners, and anyone with an interest in historic preservation. To download the database, please click HERE.
West Scranton Hyde Park Neighborhood Watch, Inc.
This team developed a Summer Day Camp Model to target the Skateboard Community at Jackson Street Skate Park, Scranton. The group also created and produced marketing materials and a website.
2014 - 2015
Lackawanna Historical Society
The class designed and created an interactive website, which is a companion piece to "You Live Here, You Should Know This!", a Jeopardy-style local history game show annual produced by the Historical Society. The game was unveiled at a Launch Party in April at The Leonard Theater in downtown Scranton.
Neighborworks Northeastern Pennsylvania
Leadership Lackawanna partnered with this organization to plan and execute an expanded version of "Paint the Town", an annual painting and property maintenance event. A free Kick-Off Celebration was held in May at Weston Field in Scranton.
Voluntary Action Center
The class assisted the Center with branding and structuring and then helped them unveil and celebrate their new location with a block-party. The free party was held in May on the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue in Scranton.
2013 - 2014
Dress for Success Lackawanna
This team helped to honor and celebrate the organizations 15 year impact in northeastern Pennsylvania by creating an informational anniversary video that was showcased at a luncheon containing over 500 guests. They also collaborated with local schools to host a poster contest and finally, they established the inaugural Recognize and Refer breakfast to unite all of Dress for Success Lackawanna's partners.
The Griffin Pond Animal Shelter
This Leadership Lackawanna team partnered with the Shelter to market and promote their Pet Foster Program. It was determined the general public wasn't familiar with the need for foster families, so the group focused heavily on awareness and then organized a Family Fun pet day in Clarks Summit on May 25th. Over 800 people attended this event.
Shalom Scranton
Their mission is to build a sustainable community through education and healthy living. Leadership Lackawanna participants united with this organization to market and promote the Greenhouse Project, which is located inside Nay Aug Park in Scranton. In addition to plant and flower sales, and increased marketing efforts, the team organized a Family Fun Block Party for the Greenhouse. Over 500 guests attended this event.
2012-2013
The “Phoebe Snow Diner” Project
Together with the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society the LL team assisted with the ELDCPS’s marketing plan and hosted a dining car launch event.
The “Foster Our Future” Project
A collaboration with Friendship House and included the creation of a National Foster Care Awareness Month marketing campaign and a family-fun event, aimed at educating the public about foster care and adoption.
The “A-Raising Race” Project
Raised awareness about the United Neighborhoods Centers of NEPA’s programs through a scavenger hunt type race that took place at multiple locations throughout Scranton.
2011 - 2012
The Restore the Slope Project
This project renovated one of the three historic buildings remaining on the Gravity Slope Colliery site in Archbald known as the “Oil House.” The project consisted of roof repair, ceiling construction, door and window replacement, brickwork, graffiti removal, painting, stairs, exterior site clean-up and landscaping.
First Friday Scranton- StArt’s (Storefront ART)
The goal was to foster the development of downtown Scranton through the promotion of local artists and the inspiration of new business opportunities.
Scranton Civic Ballet Company
The NEPA Kids Fit for Life was a one day carnival event that taught children, ages 8-14, about the fun they can have while being physically active.
Skills in Scranton - Futures Now
This project was a Leadership Lackawanna initiative designed to educate and excite local high school students about Math and Science careers in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The students had the opportunity to watch an interactive Chemistry Show, presented by the Franklin Institute and participate in a career expo.
2010 - 2011
BUY Fresh Buy Local Northeast Region Chapter
Leadership Lackawanna worked with this organization to perform public outreach and education and increase the demand for locally grown food, via a membership drive, chapter event and annual publication. Their event, a wine and cheese event held on April 30th at Maioltesis Winery, raised over $4,000 and had over 200 people in attendance.
Electric City Trolley Museum Association
The Tracks to Our Past project consisted of renovating “Bay 4” inside the museum which allows for additional room for exhibitions and also provides more event space for the community to utilize. They then held a Speakeasy Soiree party, on March 24, 2011 inside the Bay, which raised additional funds and served as an unveiling. Together, sponsorship and donations for this project totaled $12,000.
Meals on Wheels of NEPA
On April 12, 2011 at the Scranton Cultural Center, this project team held "Hunger for the Arts" an event featuring an array of artistic services or purchase a piece of locally made sculpture, photography, jewelry and more. They raised over $8,000 for Meals on Wheels.
Nancy K. Holmes Public Library - Renovating Our Future
This project consisted of converting an old storage area inside the library into a safe and fun new room for the pre-teen and teenage population to enjoy. The project totaled over $12,000 in sponsorships and donations. A ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the room was held on April 29, 2011.
2009 - 2010
The Heritage Explorer Bike Tour
Together with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority(LHVA), the team organized a day-long, family and friends bicycle tour event on 6/4/10 highlighting the LHVA trail. The event consisted of two parts: an opening reception and the bike tour. The goal of this event was to raise awareness and raise funds for the trail and to provide cycling enthusiasts and families the opportunity to experience the natural beauty, history, and cultural diversity of Lackawanna County and the surrounding communities.
One Stop Donation Drop (OSDD)
This event builds on the concept that if we donate our gently worn clothing, household items and sports equipment to local charitable organizations, who assist the neediest of the needy, then we are keeping these items out of landfills and helping our community organizations at the same time. LL expanded OSDD to a new location, Scranton! This day-long community-focused, multi-tiered donation event benefited several local non-profits including Ronald McDonald House, United Neighborhood Centers, Women’s Resource Center, Cinderella’s Closet, Voluntary Action Center, Friendship House, Friends of the Poor and Boys and Girls Clubs of NEPA. OSDD is a nationwide event and is coordinated locally by Nancy Sarno.
St. Joseph’s Center
Leadership Lackawanna created and implemented a mentoring program at St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton to support women and families who move from either the Walsh Manor or Mother/Infant Program into permanent, independent housing. It will also include a new series of educational programs designed to inform and train community mentors. This program will match community mentors with single women and will provide the support, respect, integrity and resources needed to help these women and their children become independent.
A Brush with Kindness
A neighborhood revitalization program under the direction of Habitat for Humanity of Lackawanna County. This program gives low-income homeowners in Lackawanna County an easy and affordable way to improve and revitalize their homes and neighborhoods. The program focuses on exterior home repair services like painting, minor exterior repairs, landscaping, and weatherization. Leadership Lackawanna’s launch of “A Brush with Kindness” will help Habitat for Humanity serve the citizens of Northeastern Pennsylvania on a greater level as we work to increase the number of families living in safe and affordable housing.
Abington Area Joint Recreation Board - Walk the Lake
Working to build a pathway around the lake Hillside Park in Clarks Summit, this project provided a handicap-accessible, family-friendly walkway.
2008 - 2009
The Restoration of Hanlon's Grove at Nay Aug Park
The mission of this project was to restore and enhance a blighted section of the park to a point of destination, by reinstating a picnic grove and creating a site that encourages community pride and environmental connectivity.
Boys and Girls Clubs of NEPA
This project involved painting, decorating and reorganizing the existing layout into a more kid friendly and modern computer lounge.
Northeast Regional Cancer Institute's Cancer Survivor Park– The Cancer Survivors Park, at McDade Park in Scranton
This project was created to provide a physical location at which to display the artwork of individuals who participated in the Survivor’s Tiles Art Therapy Project. However time, and more specifically northeastern Pennsylvania winters, have taken a toll on the Park. This two phase, multi-step park renovation project included new/enhanced landscape, pathways, benches, pavers, tribute trees and the removal of the tiled spires.
SCOLA
With the assistance of SCOLA Volunteers for Literacy, this project involved creating a year-long, public-awareness campaign. The campaign theme was “Read Better. It’s Not Too Late” and had two focuses. The first focus was on lifestyle, the latter economic. The campaign reached across a range of platforms, including television, radio, billboards, promotional flyers/cards, displays, newspapers and the Internet.
2007 - 2008
Leave Your Mark on the Park- Restoration of the Schimelfenig Pavilion at Nay Aug Park
The project included installing landscaping and a brick-paver walkway and patio on both sides of the pavilion.
Project Success: A Conference for Youth
This project was designed to introduce local high school students to avenues that will help them to be successful by exposing them to various speakers, exercises and activities. The Conference gave students an opportunity to shadow a local business professional and learn about a job they have some interest in pursuing following high school.
The Local Flavor of Lackawanna
A wine tasting event to benefit Children’s Advocacy Center.
Answering the Call of the Wild
A project assisting the Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary in providing the best life possible to animals. The primary goals of this project include promoting awareness of the mission of the sanctuary, organizing various on-site cleanups and raising money for food and supplies.
2006 - 2007
My Future in the Neighborhood
Career Day in January for seventh-grade students at which they received a career assessment tool created by the team. The team, along with leaders from a variety of organizations, held targeted career information sessions with those students in April.
Gimme Shelter
A project to raise awareness and funds for the Humane Society of Lackawanna County. Put together a book that sold for $10 and held a Pet Walk at Nay Aug Park.
Doors Open Lackawanna
This project offered free admission to various historic sites and businesses, mainly in the downtown area, not generally open to the public. Goal was to let residents know what tourist attractions and treasures are available in the area. Free trolley service was provided to all sites.
2005 - 2006
Helping Kids Rebound
Children’s Advocacy Center fundraising/awareness event that paired the Harlem Jokers against area political, media, and business celebrities in a basketball game to benefit the CAC.
Women’s Resource Center Awareness Campaign
Work with extended network of staff and volunteers of the WRC to gather information to update their website, promotional items and educational materials.
Betton House
Mentoring our Future was a partnership with the Betton House that required meeting with students twice a month. Each meeting has a different theme with sessions focused on workshops, lectures and activities.
2004 - 2005
Walk / Drive Scranton Project
Phase One of Courthouse Square signage system to assist residents and visitors in locating points of interest, and help in negotiating streets.
A New Leash on Life: Connecting People Through Pets
Event to bring people and pets together for a special day.
Elderly Resource Guide
Create a resource guide to improve the quality of life of our community of elderly by raising awareness of services available to them.

Community Pride Project
