Jo Ann Durdan
What’s your current position?
Education Program Specialist and Interim Lead Coordinator for Continuing Education. I have been with Penn State Scranton's Center for Business Development and Community Outreach for going on 8 years in May. I have been in various positions in the department and recently was charged with a Regional Position covering Penn State Scranton, Penn State Wilkes-Barre, and Penn State Hazelton's Continuing Education. I connect the region with Penn State resources to fulfill the needs in areas of continuing education, professional development, and career advancement in response to the region's educational and professional development needs.
What would you say most motivates you to do the work you do?
Helping students of all ages fulfill their need for success. Whether it's the summer camps, certification programs, or professional development training, providing the platform to continuously grow and learn.
What are you most passionate about?
It's about lifelong learning.
Where did you grow up and did you go to a college/trade school after high school?
I grew up in Jermyn. After high school received an associate's degree from Lackawanna Jr. College. Returned to Penn State Scranton in 2014 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communications and a minor in Business in 2019. In 2024 graduated with a Master's Degree in Education from Penn State World Campus. In between received a certificate in Integrated Digital Marketing in 2021 and a post-baccalaureate certificate in Distance Education in 2022. It was different coming back to school as an adult learner. There was context to the information and a better understanding. I really enjoyed the experience.
How did you end up in NEPA?
I was born and raised in Lackawanna County. My grandparents and parents lived their lives here.
Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are?
My parents, both who worked extremely hard their entire lives and instilled in us a work ethic and a love for learning.
How did you learn about Leadership Lackawanna? I learned about Leadership Lackawanna many years ago and always wanted the experience. When I received the Tressler Award for Professional Development at Penn State Scranton, it provided the means and opportunity to finally enter the program. It was very worthwhile and educational. I met some wonderful people and being a part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library was an experience I will take with me forever.
What has your involvement with Leadership Lackawanna been post-graduation?
Wherever I can lend a hand, I will be there. Helping to promote through social media, donating for an event, and speaking to the next class of Leadership Lackawanna at Penn State Scranton.
